Welcome to my September e-newsletter. It has been a busy two months since my last update. I was hard at work in the constituency during the Parliamentary recess, including running a summer campaign week of street surgeries and grass-roots engagement with constituents.
I hit the ground running when Parliament returned, making a number of speeches and interventions. On the first day back, I spoke in the debate on the Fisheries Bill which will enable us to take action on marine conservation when we regain control of our fishing waters at the end of this year. Other issues I have raised on the floor of the House of Commons include maintaining the arms embargo on Iran, Covid protection in care homes, tackling rough sleeping, and including more black history in the school curriculum.
I’ve continued my campaign to ensure trade negotiations do not undermine our high food and animal welfare standards. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch to express their support on this. I wrote recently for the Mail on Sunday on the importance of keeping out unsafe food imports and my article is published here.
I am happy to report that Barnet Council’s planning committee has rejected plans to build ten story high blocks of flats at Victoria Quarter in New Barnet. There were over a 1000 objections and I spoke against the proposal at the virtual planning committee hearing. Now the application goes on to the Mayor of London. I’ve also been speaking out in the national media on the need to ensure that planning reforms under consideration do not lead to over-development in Barnet.
Finally, following a number of reports from constituents who have struggled to obtain a Covid test, I raised these concerns directly with the Secretary of State for Health. Further information on how to obtain a test can be found here. I’ve been keeping in touch with Barnet Council, Barnet Hospital and other local groups regarding the Covid situation, and have been scrutinising the Government’s action on the virus closely.

Your local MP and her team are working hard to respond to constituents’ concerns; but some changes have had to be made to the way Theresa and her staff are working in order to comply with social distancing rules and public health advice

In order to comply with social distancing and avoid any crowding in her constituency office, all Theresa’s surgeries are now appointment-only and meetings will take place via Zoom where possible. The next surgery takes place on Saturday 3rd October. Anyone wishing to see Theresa or her staff will need to make an appointment in advance. You will NOT be seen if you turn up without a pre-booked appointment. Bookings can be made using the contact details set out above.
The waiting room which is normally available during surgeries will be closed. Constituents will need to arrive at the time of their appointment and will be asked to queue outside if they are early, or if there are delays to the appointment schedule. We apologise for this inconvenience but it is necessary to minimise the number of people in the constituency office at one time.
