Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, today attended an event in Regent College, Imperial Drive, Harrow, to mark Bangladeshi Independence Day which takes place every year on 26th March.
She was there to support Hannah David, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Harrow West, and Conservative local election candidates in Harrow, including Mohammed Eaoyor Shaikh. The event was well attended by leading members of the Bangladeshi community.
In her speech to the meeting, Theresa said "It is a great honour to be here to take part in your celebrations of Bangladeshi Independence Day. This is an important event in the UK calendar. It gives an opportunity to celebrate the strong relationship between the UK and Bangladesh and the great contribution made by the Bangladeshi community to life in Britain."
"This Government is determined to ensure that that the economic recovery which is now underway is a recovery for everyone. That's why we're helping hard-working families with their household bills by reducing income tax for millions of people, freezing fuel duty and helping with energy bills. We are also helping every small business with cuts to jobs taxes. The Bangladeshi community have demonstrated their strong entrepreneurial spirit and the Conservative-led Government wants to help all those Bangladeshi businesses to succeed."
"One of my priorities in politics is a cohesive society where we can celebrate different cultures and traditions. So I am delighted to be here supporting Hannah David and the Conservative council candidates in Harrow at this celebration of Bangladeshi culture and community."
As well as speeches, the event included dancing and singing by members of Harrow's Bangladeshi community. Guests of honour included the Conservative candidate for Leicester East, Kishan Devani.
