Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, this afteroon signed the Book of Commitment set up in the House of Commons by the Holocaust Educational Trust.Every year, the Book of Commitment gives MPs the opportunity to honour those who were victims of the Holocaust and to express their commitment to combating prejudice and anti-semitism.
Theresa Villiers said "Signing the Book of Commitment is an important part of the build up to Holocaust Memorial Day. This takes place on 27th January every year on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, the site of the largest mass murder in history."
"It is vital that we never let the Holocaust be forgotten so we can continue to honour the memory of its millions of victims and so we have a permanent reminder of the horrific consequences that prejudice, anti-semitism and racism can lead to."
"Events to mark Holocaust Memorial Day will be held right across the country over the next few weeks. I will be attending Barnet Council's commemoration event on Sunday 19th January. Holocaust Memorial Day has a special resonance for us in Barnet because our borough is home to a number of very brave men and women who survived Nazi persecution and the death camps. Many other residents lost close friends and family members in this tragedy."
"I am also a strong supporter of the Holocaust Educational Trust which does great work in ensuring that a new generation of children and young people understand the horrors of the Holocaust and hear directly from survivors about what really happened."
