“Dear President Anastasiades
I was very saddened to learn of the death of former President, Glafcos Clerides. I would like to pass my condolence and sympathy to you and to all Cypriots on this loss.
I had the chance to meet President Clerides when I made my first visit to Cyprus some years ago. I was very honoured to have the opportunity to meet such a great statesman.
I cannot imagine that there is anyone else who worked harder for the reunification of Cyprus. President Clerides served his country with huge dedication, integrity, courage and fortitude. The list of his achievements is too long to include in this letter but I am sure that you will agree with me that one of his most historic was to obtain EU membership for Cyprus.
I am certain that he will be much missed. As one of the last leaders of Europe to have seen active service in World War II, his passing away marks the end of an era.
Best regards Theresa Villiers”
