Mr Anastasiades, who received 57.5% of the vote, is the leader of the centre-right Democratic Rally Party.
Early exit polls showing Anastasiades victory on Sunday, sparked enthusiastic celebrations outside his campaign headquarters in Nicosia by supporters. Following confirmation of the result, Theresa Villiers said:
“I am sending my warmest congratulations to Nicos Anastasiades on his election as President of the Republic of Cyprus. His resounding victory is testament to his hard work and dedication over many years. It also reflects the high esteem in which he is viewed across Europe and also by the Cypriot community in the UK.”
“I have known Nicos for over 10 years and I have the highest regard for his abilities. He will have many challenges to deal with as President, not least the request for loans from the EU and IMF to support the Cyprus economy. I am sure he will approach these issues with determination and good sense, as well as pressing for progress towards a settlement to reunite Cyprus.”
For many years, Ms Villiers has been a great supporter of Cyprus and the British Cypriot community in Barnet. She sent her congratulations to the new President in a letter to Alexandros Zenon, the High Commissioner for the Republic of Cyprus.
