This is the first time since joining the EU in 2004 that Cyprus has assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of Ministers. Cyprus took over the presidency from Denmark yesterday (1st July) and will be in charge of EU business for the next six months before handing over to Ireland on 1st January 2013.
Theresa said, “I very much welcome the start of Cyprus Presidency. I hope it will bring new energy to the campaign for freedom for Cyprus and help to focus other EU Member States on the pressing need to re-unite the island.”
“Assuming the EU Presidency is a historic step for Cyprus. A country which has too often suffered at the hands of larger, more powerful nations is now playing a pivotal role within the European Union, with a seat at the top table of international affairs. I know the Cyprus Government has been working incredibly hard in preparing for the Presidency and I wish them well with the important task ahead of them.”
