Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet has issued the following Yom Kippur message.
“At this solemn and important date in the Jewish calendar. I would like to wish an easy fast to those in Barnet who are observing Yom Kippur.
Once again, this sombre and reflective occasion allows us an opportunity to highlight the hugely positive contribution made by the Jewish community in Barnet and wider British society.
To all who are observing this holiest of days, may you have a spiritually reflective and rewarding fast.”
Commencing at sunset on Sunday 24th September, Jewish people around the world are observing a 25-hour long period of fasting and prayer. Yom Kippur, meaning Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Those observing Yom Kippur abstain from acts that are prohibited on the Shabbat and spend time reflecting on their actions over the preceding 12 months.
