Mitzvah Day is a Jewish-led initiative aimed at encouraging all faiths, and none, to volunteer in the community and support charities. This year it is part of ‘a year of service’, which encourages people to take part in 12 volunteering days throughout the year.
Theresa and a group of adults and children from the synagogue visited residents at the Lady Sarah Cohen Home in Colney Hatch Lane. Shul members provided entertainment in the form of board games and music. She said:
“Mitzvah Day is a hugely important example of community action and I have thoroughly enjoyed my visit to see the residents at the Lady Sarah Cohen home. This is clearly a very impressive facility.”
Afterwards Theresa accompanied the members back to Southgate Progressive Synagogue to plant a rosebush in celebration of their shul’s 70th Birthday.
Speaking after the event, Theresa said:
“It was an honour to have been invited to join in with this special celebration. Mitzvah Day provides a brilliant example to others on volunteering and supporting vulnerable people.”
“I would like to thank both the Southgate Progressive Synagogue and the staff and residents of the Lady Sarah Cohen home for involving me in some great Mitzvah Day activities.”
