Theresa Villiers today attended the official opening of two new exhibitions at Barnet Museum in Wood Street, High Barnet. They covered "Barnet and World War One” and “Barnet High Street - Then and Now" and were formally opened by the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the Borough, Martin Russell. To mark the occasion, the volunteers who run the Barnet Museum organised an event called "Tea in the Park" in Courthouse Gardens behind the museum, with various entertainments such as ukulele players and the Barnet Band.
Following the event, Theresa said "This was a very successful event to launch two new exhibitions at Barnet Museum. It was great that the Representative Deputy Lieutenant was here to formally open these new displays. I was pleased to see the museum full of visitors."
"In the centenary year of the outbreak of World War One, it is very timely for the Barnet Museum to be focusing on the impact the conflict had on our local area. It was moving to see the long list of people from just one school, St Margaret's, who lost their lives. The Great War changed this country irrevocably and the many centenaries we will commemorate over the next four years will provide an opportunity to reflect on the great courage and sacrifice of those who fought in the war."
