At the Hindu Cultural Centre, Colney Hatch Lane, the Chipping Barnet MP received a warm welcome and watched theatrical and dance performances about Diwali. The event was also attended by Finchley and Golders Green MP, Mike Freer and by local MEP, Marina Yannakoudakis.
At Bhaktivedanta Manor, Theresa met a number of leading figures in the Hindu community and addressed a gathering of several hundred people along with Eric Pickles MP.
She said: "The Diwali message is one that can have relevance across British society. The idea of a festival of light to commemorate the victory of enlightenment over ignorance can resonate with people of all faiths and none. The fact that Diwali is such an established and important part of the UK annual calendar is a tribute to the success of the Hare Krishna and Hindu community in this country"
Although sadly the weather did not permit the usual Bhaktivedanta Diwali fireworks display to go ahead, the evening was a great success.
