Theresa Villiers, Member of Parliament for Chipping Barnet, has issued a special Chanukah message and taken part in the Chanukah celebrations at Number 10 Downing Street, along with members of Barnet’s Jewish community.
The Downing Street Chanukah reception is usually hosted by the Prime Minister but a visit to flood hit areas by the PM meant that that Home Secretary, Theresa May, presided over the event this year. It is attended by representatives from across Britain’s Jewish community, as well as MPs. The Home Secretary lit the first candle, and then blessings were given by Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis.
Theresa Villiers MP said: “I am very honoured to have been asked to attend the Prime Minister’s Chanukah reception with friends from my constituency. For all those celebrating Chanukah, I would like to send festive greetings. Over the coming days, I look forward to seeing candles lit and celebrating the miracle of Chanukah with the Jewish community in Barnet. As well as being a time for family, the story of Chanukah – of standing by your principles, of never losing hope – is one that can have relevance and meaning for everyone. Chanukah Sameach!”
Barnet residents attending the event included two of Theresa’s constituents, Adrian Korsner and Lillian Gellnick.
