In her first speech from the backbenches for many years, Chipping Barnet MP, Theresa Villiers, made the case for protecting of Barnet’s green spaces and conserving our local environment. She spoke out against plans for tower blocks in the North London Business Park and new housing on the ‘Whalebones’ fields in High Barnet.
During her years as local MP, Villiers has always opposed over-development, backing new homes only where they are in keeping with the surrounding suburban environment and capable of being supported by local infrastructure.
Theresa said: “Finding a way to build the new homes we need whilst at the same time ensuring we safeguard our green spaces and protect the character of our neighbourhoods is one of the biggest challenges we face in modern Britain.”
“The key is to ensure development is appropriate to local circumstances. I welcome the new homes being built as part of the regeneration of a number of areas in the borough, including Dollis Valley, but will continue to oppose any plans which amount to over-development or which would put too much strain on local roads and services. Currently I am working with local councillors to try and prevent multi-storey blocks of flats from being built in North London Business Park. I will also fight as hard as I can to protect the fields at Whalebones in High Barnet from the threat of housing development.”
