Welcome to my October e-newsletter reporting on another turbulent month in politics. For the second time, I backed Rishi Sunak to become our Prime Minister and I warmly welcome his election to this role. I know that he is determined to tackle the cost of living pressures caused by the severe global economic crisis which has resulted from the aftermath of Covid and the war in Ukraine.
The Government’s energy price cap is keeping bills down for households, businesses and public services, but I have been pressing for a targeted scheme to continue once the cap is lifted in April. I have also urged the new Chancellor of the Exchequer to find additional funding for Barnet schools struggling with rising costs.
In Parliament, I highlighted a number of issues including: the difficulties many parents have in getting the right support for their children with special educational needs; additional protection against redundancy for pregnant women and new mothers; carers’ leave to enable people to take time off work to care for disabled or elderly relatives; the protests occurring in Iran; and saving the 84 bus route.
I made a speech on the Retained EU Law Bill (REUL) in which I supported the aim of the Bill to reform and improve the regulations inherited from the EU. But I warned that this process should not be rushed and that our high standards of environment protection, food safety and animal welfare must be maintained.
Visits and events around my constituency included a procession with the East Barnet Royal British Legion to launch the 2022 Poppy Appeal yesterday. I felt a sense of sadness that this was taking place without Laurie Williams, the much-loved former East Barnet councillor who recently passed away. He will be greatly missed.
I was also delighted to attend a performance at the Bull Theatre, in High Barnet, for Black History Month. This was a hugely impressive performance with an optimistic and joyful message about the contribution of the black community to Britain, both now and in the past. I am a longstanding supporter of Black History Month, and have previously tabled a debate on this issue in Parliament.
At the start of October, I had a busy programme of events at the Conservative Party conference meeting the National Oceanography Centre, the Centre for European Reform, UK Bioindustry Association, CPRE, Conservative Environment Network, Animals Matter, Compassion in World Farming, the Marie Curie charity, the Alzheimer’s Society, the British Tamil Conservatives, Conservative Friends of India, and Conservative Friends of Israel.
I have undertaken a number of media interviews on a range of subjects with BBC London, Radio London, GB News, Al Jazeera, Newsnight, Politics Home, BBC Radio 4 Week In Westminster, and Times Radio.
Further information on my campaigns and activities is available in the links below to articles on my website. Please forward this email to anyone you think would be interested to read it or might like to join this mailing list.
