Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, was asked by local charity, Cherry Lodge Cancer Care, to switch on their festive lights on the bandstand outside the Spires Shopping Centre in High Barnet yesterday evening.
“Lights of Love” is an annual event for Cherry Lodge. Theresa has been asked to carry out the formal switch-on for the last few years. She is a long-time supporter of Cherry Lodge which gives care and support to people suffering from cancer and to their families.
Around 50 people braved the cold to gather outside the Spires to support the Lights of Love event. The Cherry Lodge Choir sang a number of songs and the audience were encouraged to join in. Readings and poems were read out by Cherry Lodge staff, trustees and volunteer supporters, culminating with a minute’s silence and a list of names of people who have received help from Cherry Lodge during 2017, including some who have passed away.
Speaking after the event, Theresa said “This is always a moving occasion when many families remember loved ones they have lost. It is also an important opportunity to show support for the wonderful work done by Cherry Lodge for people coping with cancer.”
“I try to help Cherry Lodge when I can. It is always an honour for me to be asked to switch on their festive lights. I very much hope the charity can look forward to another successful year providing much valued services to my constituents.”
