Welcome to my July e-newsletter!
I’ve had a strong focus on my campaign to save Barnet police station over the past month, raising it twice in Parliament, including during a late night debate I tabled on this issue. I called on the Mayor to give the same reprieve for Barnet police station that he recently announced for Uxbridge.
My fight against Ulez expansion continued in a debate which was put on the agenda after more than 100,000 people signed a petition against imposing new charges on drivers. You can sign my petition against Ulez expansion here.
Other issues I raised in Parliament included the importance of funding to address the continuing terror threat in Northern Ireland; action to prevent UK based charities from any involvement in threats to Iranian dissidents; and the use of AI in defence systems. I also spoke in support of the new law to stop councils from boycotting Israel.
I’ve been working on health and NHS related matters, welcoming details published on the expansion of premises and staff at Barnet A&E. This is something I have been calling for, after discussions with doctors and nurses in our local hospital.
I also signed up to the new All Party Parliamentary Group on birth trauma. A constituent came to my advice surgery to tell me about her experience of birth trauma and asked me to support my colleague Theo Clarke MP in her efforts to improve care for this condition. In the Chamber, I highlighted the importance of improving care for people with acquired brain injury after being asked to do so by another constituent – one who has bravely battled with this condition after a tragic car collision. And I dropped in to meet the action group campaigning for people who believe they were harmed by the drug, Primados, to hear their stories.
As is often the case, apprenticeships have been on my agenda. As well as being at the launch of a new report by the APPG for Apprenticeships, I attended meeting with Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, in Number Ten Downing Street, to discuss how we can deliver more apprenticeships.
Last week, Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (of which I am a member) published a detailed report on the security threat posed by China. We concluded that “China’s state intelligence apparatus – almost certainly the largest in the world – targets the UK and its interests prolifically and aggressively”.
Other events and meetings I undertook included National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast, the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus, the Somali Bravanese Welfare Association/Arahma School, and the APPG on Suicide Prevention.
Further information on my campaigns and activities is available in the links below to articles on my website. Please forward this email to anyone you think would be interested to read it or might like to join this mailing list.
All the best
