Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, is opposing the latest plans for development at the Victoria Quarter on the old gas works site in New Barnet, and she is urging her constituents to do the same.
Commenting on the plans brought forward by the developer Fairview Homes, Ms Villiers said: “I’ve been working with residents for over 15 years to try to secure the right outcome for the old gas works site.”
“I want new homes to be built on this brownfield land. That’s why I backed the scheme for Victoria Quarter which was approved in 2017. If these plans had been taken forward, there could already be people living in brand new homes there.”
“We defeated proposals last year which would have amounted to an overdevelopment. There are still serious problems with the revised scheme that has now been brought forward. I’m objecting to this planning application because I want Fairview to listen to the ideas put forward by residents’ groups such as the New Barnet Residents Association.”
“These would provide workable solutions to the problems with what has been brought forward. A key step which Fairview could take to reassure people in New Barnet would be to reduce the height of the buildings, reduce the number of flats proposed, and increase the number of parking spaces for residents.”
“After all these years, we are getting closer to something which might be a viable compromise and enable new homes finally to be delivered on this site. I’m therefore encouraging constituents to have their say and send in their views on what should be built at Victoria Quarter.”
